Fly me to... GREECE

There is a Greece you think you know. White marble, azure water, islands wrapped in haze. And then there is the one archaeologists are quietly bringing back to light. A Greece of blazing ochre, lapis-lazuli blue and blood red, where the statues, their outlines painted, seemed to smile, and the temples glowed like illuminated manuscripts. What if we followed them, the scientists, the restorers, the collectors of pigment, across four of the most spellbinding archaeological sites in the Mediterranean world? That is what we did. And this journey, I promise you, will change the way you see white.

THE COLOUR BENEATH THE STONE

This journey moves by alternation. In the morning you decipher, you climb a sacred way, you lean over a recovered pigment, you learn to see. In the afternoon you let go, a pool facing the Aegean, a table in the shade, grilled fish and cold wine. Stone asks for attention, the sea gives it back. You pass from the cerebral to the sensory without a jolt, and it’s in that sway that Greece truly reveals itself. Neither a race through ruins nor idle lounging, but both held together. You leave with the body rested and the gaze changed.

You come to read stones. You end up seeing the light.

We love Greece for…

Weisse’s selection

The story

“You leave believing Greece is white. Bare marble, harsh light, the silence of museums. Then a pigment resurfaces, lapis blue on the cheek of a statue, blood red in the hollow of a temple, and everything tips. Antiquity was not pale, it blazed. You come home never looking at a ruin the same way again. White, from now on, is only a colour that has forgotten the others.”
